Sauron never truly took his gaze from the kingdoms of the North – even as the Third Age drew to a close, the forces of Evil advanced on Dale, Erebor, Mirkwood, and Lothlórien. Across the lands of Rhovanion, the forces of Good mustered their armies to defend their homes, their heroic deeds tying up Sauron’s armies that were sorely needed as the War of the Ring raged in the South.
This expansion for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game™ allows you to campaign in three distinct areas of conflict – the Battle of Dale, the Defence of Mirkwood, and the Assault on Lothlórien. These can be played individually or combined into a grand ‘Defence of the North’ campaign. The extensive background section provides you with deep insight into the history of the Northern Kingdoms, including events that transpired during the War of the Ring, when much of the attention of others was elsewhere. In this book, you will also find many scenarios, new ways to assemble your armies, and meet new heroes and villains. Additionally, this expansion contains a gallery of miniatures and an appendix with additional content covering the historical battles of the Northern lands.
This 112-page hardback expansion contains:
– History of the North: An overview of the background of the Northern lands of Middle-earth, including Sauron's attack on the area during the War of the Ring.
– Scenarios: 18 narrative scenarios, including background, battlefield setup, victory conditions, rules, and more.
– Campaign - Defence of the North: Rules to combine the 18 scenarios into an extensive campaign or into three individual campaigns that can be played independently
– Armies: Background details and rules for eight armies that fought in Rhovanion, namely the Garrison of Dale, the Reclaimed Erebor, Lothlórien, Thranduil's Halls, the Beornings, the Easterlings, Mordor, and the Dark Denizens of Mirkwood. Each section contains the units and army bonus available to the respective army, and tactical insights into the strengths and weaknesses of your force. Also included are rules for remarkable units that fought in these wars.
– Legendary Legions: Rules for six legions representing the Army of Dale, the Defenders of Erebor, the Beornings, the Host of the Dragon Emperor, the Evil creatures of Mirkwood, and the Assault on Lothlórien. Each Legion brings restrictions on army composition but offers additional rules that the Legion can use to its advantage.
– Appendix: Provides additional background and four scenarios to recreate historical battles in Rhovanion, including the Destruction of Dale, the Battle of Dale, the Battle of Five Armies, and the High Pass.
