Scarlet & Violet is the first expansion in the Scarlet & Violet series, first unveiled at the 2022 Pokémon World Championships, and celebrates the return of the Pokémon-ex gameplay mechanic, which can appear at any stage of evolution and feature high HP, powerful attacks, and abilities.
Inspired by the Terastallization phenomenon from the Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet video games, the expansion introduces Terastallized Pokémon-ex with unique embossed illustrations that highlight their Tera Types. These new cards follow the same rules as Pokémon-ex but do not take damage from attacks when on the Bench.

Some improvements to the card design are being introduced. The yellow borders of Pokémon Trading Card Game cards are now gray to match the cards released in Japan. This will make the Pokémon Trading Card Game more consistent worldwide and better showcase the illustrations on the cards. Additionally, subcategories for Trainer cards—such as Supporter, Item, and Stadium—will appear in the top left corner to be more visible in hand, Basic Energy cards will have an additional Energy symbol in the bottom right corner to make them easier to track during gameplay, and expansion symbols will be replaced on all cards by expansion codes and language codes.
Due to global inflation affecting material and production costs, MSRPs of Pokémon Trading Card Game products will increase differently worldwide with the launch of the Scarlet & Violet series. To ensure the Pokémon Trading Card Game continues to be a positive experience, each Pokémon Trading Card Game booster pack will contain three guaranteed holographic cards – all cards of "rare" rarity or higher will now be holographic.
